A constituent unit of the Manipal University, Manipal, School of Communication, Manipal was established in 1997. School of Communication, Manipal is self-affiliated with the Manipal University, Manipal.

School of Communication, Manipal is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956. It has received the ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 Certification.

School of Communication, Manipal was identified as an Institution with Potential for Excellence by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India also conferred Autonomy to Manipal University.

The institute was declared as a Deemed to be University, in the name and style of Manipal (Deemed to be University) by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India.

In 2017, the National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked School of Communication, Manipal in the fifth position among media colleges in India.

Under the Manipal University, Manipal, various courses, and specialization in media and communications are offered at the graduate and undergraduate level. Add-on certificate courses and diploma courses are also conducted at the institute.

From 2015, in order to keep pace with the changing needs and direction of the media industry, the course in Journalism and Communication (B.A.) has been renamed as Media and Communication (B.A.).

School of Communication, Manipal has tied up with top-level international institutes in ASEAN and EU countries for International Exchange Programmes in which the students and faculty participate. In the college premises, various examinations are held, including the examinations conducted by Manipal University, Manipal.

For getting admission to the college, students must first register with the college online. Examinations are held by the Institute for admission to different courses.

A special complaint cell (Sexual Harassment Cell) has been formed for the female students in the college. Students can directly complain orally or by written application to the head of the cell. Apart from this, Ragging is strictly prohibited on the college campus
