About St. Francis College for Women

St. Francis College for Women, Hyderabad was established in 1959 is a Catholic minority Institution founded by the Sisters of Charity of St. Bartolomea Capitanio and St. Vincenza Gerosa.

The college is affiliated with Osmania University, Hyderabad and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.46 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) in 2012.

The aim of the college is to every student who passes through the portals of the college emerges as a wholly developed individual symbolizing the spirit of enterprise for the women.

It was a women private college provided a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Hyderabad played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college is housed in an impressive campus spread over eight acres in the heart of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. From a modest student strength of 15 in 1959, the college has grown into a prestigious institution offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with a student force of 3200.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government.

The college autonomy was conferred on the college by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1988.

The college also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of education, sports and curricular activities under the University of Delhi, New Delhi.

The college one of the two colleges in Delhi to have been awarded the prestigious college with a Potential for Excellence grant by the University Grants Commission in the year 2004.

As a minority institution, the college reserves for itself its inherent and constitutional right with regard to management and administration also the college was also judged Best Arts College, Best Science College and Best Commerce College in Hyderabad by India Today Magazine.

The college offers three years undergraduate and two years postgraduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management stream with various specializations under the Osmania University, Hyderabad. It also offers Post-graduate Diploma and Add-On Certificate courses.

The college offers an exciting range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs amply supported by a variety of diploma programs and certificate courses. From the Choice and Credit Based Semester System (CCBSS), the college has currently entered into the Choice Based Semester System (CBCS) proposed by the UGC and has pioneered the implementation of this scheme.

Students can choose from a variety of courses of other streams. They can also earn extra credits by taking up skill-based Certificate/Diploma/Summer Study Abroad programs.

University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the Osmania University, Hyderabad, and various other examinations are held in the college premises. The admission criteria for the college is strictly based on Merit and Written Test.

  • The real strength of our institution lies in its strong team of highly qualified, competent, dedicated and committed faculty who constantly endeavor to upgrade and update their knowledge, skills and qualifications
  • The management is very supportive of its faculty, and has encouraged its teachers to pursue research and participate in seminars, workshops, and symposiums at the state, national and international levels
  • Teachers who wish to pursue research are granted two years paid leave. Financial awards are announced for those who publish research papers in standard national and international journals. Many departmentsm like Commerce, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Social Work, have taken up research projects in collaboration with external agencies.

  • In addition to conventional classroom sessions, a number of innovative methods supported by IT are applied to aid comprehension and learning. Role plays, presentations and specific skill tests are used to test different aspects of learning
  • The use of projectors for visual display is common. In addition, guest lectures by experts emphasize the relevance of what is taught in the classroom.

St Francis is deeply committed to protecting the environment. Our efforts to promote a green environment include the following:

  • A course titled Environment Studies is compulsory for all first year students
  • The environment club, Prakriti, is actively engaged in creating awareness among the youth about the threats to our environment. Students from all departments are members of this club
  • The college harvests rain water to conserve water resources
  • A waste management plant, “Shubram”, set up on December 21st, 2009
  • The campus is going green, with several lighting installations powered by solar energy
  • The college observes a five-day week of conservation of fuel through reduced commuting
