Seemanta Mahavidyalaya, Jharpokharia was established in 1979 by ceaseless efforts of the local stalwarts.

The college was accorded concurrence by the Govt. of Odisha in 1979-80 and affiliation was obtained from Utkal University in 1980-81 for opening of intermediate class in Arts.

It imparts the facilities of honours courses in the subjects of Economics, Political Science, History, Anthropology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany and Zoology.

In 2009 the National Executive Committee of NAAC on the recommendation of peer team has pleased to declare the Institution as accredited at the B level.
