In 1985, Sri Ramaswamy Memorial (SRM) Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University), was established as SRM Engineering College in Kattankulathur under University of Madras, Chennai.

At present, it has 8 group campuses in various locations i.e. Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, Tiruchchirappalli and others in Delhi NCR, Sonepat, Gangtok, and Amaravati.

In the year 2003-04, the Institute conferred the status of "Deemed University" and was renamed SRM Institute of Science and Technology. Later in 2006, the institute was again renamed as SRM University following the permission by the UGC under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956.

Later, the UGC requested to drop the 'University' from the name and therefore it was renamed back as SRM Institute of Science and Technology.

The Kattankulathur Campus was internationally accredited by

It was re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.50 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 5th January 2013.

It is recognized and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi & University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi.

At present, according to NIRF report, it is one of the top ranking universities in India with over 38,000 students and more than 2600 faculty across all the campuses.

The institute offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in Engineering, Management, Medicine and Health Sciences, and Science & Humanities stream with various specializations.
