Established on 28th March 2005, Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL), Kharagpur was set up with the initiative of Mr. Vinod Gupta, Life Fellow of IIT Kharagpur and CEO of Info USA in collaboration with the George Washington University Law School, Washington DC.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India provided a suitable grant to RGSOIPL after accepting its proposal. It is unique in the sense that it is the first of its kind to be based at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur; the only Law School in the IIT structure.
RGSOIPL is affiliated to the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. The Law College is approved and recognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI), New Delhi. The institute aims at providing the students with a strong foundation in law to arm them with knowledge of law and fields related to it.
The Law School is the first of its kind to provide legal education along with IP specialization inside the IIT system, creating a harmony between technology, law, management, and science.
On July 20, 2006, the academic activities of the Law School were started. On 23 July 2006, 3 days later, at the Kalidas auditorium, IIT Kharagpur, the Law School was formally inaugurated by the then Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, Honorable Mr. Justice V.S. Sirpurkar.
In May 2009, the first batch of the Law School graduated. Also, the 2 batches of the PGDIPL programme, which was discontinued since the year 2008, also graduated. The first Ph.D. in IP Law was awarded after that.
In 2006, the Law School started operating from the Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur. The school started operating from its own building from 2008. The architecture of the building reflects the Grecian style, replicating Supreme Court of India.
The Law School offers the Degree of Bachelor of Laws (Hons) for a period of three years, which is a full-time course and divided into six semesters.
This course is on Intellectual Property Law. The Bar Council of India has approved it. It also offers LLB & LLM courses recognised by the Bar Council of India.
At the B.Krishna Memorial National IPR Moot Competition, the Law School was awarded the sixth rank. IIT Kharagpur has also awarded the Law School in various fields.
The Law School conducts its own admission test and the students are judged on the following subjects: English (60 marks), logical reasoning (20 marks), mathematical ability (15 marks), basic science (35 marks) and legal aptitude (70 marks). Students are to fill in the application forms that are available online. The cut-off marks that are specified for taking the test are also given online.
