Ramjas College, New Delhi was established in 1917 by Rai Kedar Nath. It was managed by the Ramjas Foundation and is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. One of the premier colleges of India, it was founded to provide quality higher education to deserving candidates and become a milestone on the path of progress.
The college is affiliated to the University of Delhi, New Delhi and it was recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under the UGC Act, 1956.
It is a co-educational government college located in the urban part of Delhi. One of the oldest colleges of Delhi, the college was named in memory of Lala Ramjas, father of Rai Kedar Nath, the founder of the college. It began from the humble precincts of Darya Ganj in Old Delhi.
In its initial days, the Ramjas College was run by the Ramjas Foundation, which was an educational foundation that ran schools and educational institutions in Delhi.
With the establishment of the University of Delhi in 1922, three colleges were brought under Delhi University. They are the Hindu College, the St. Stephen's College and the Ramjas College. However, even though Ramjas College was brought under the control of the government through this, the Ramjas Foundation was still in charge of the administrative works of the college.
The college was moved to a new campus at Anand Parbat, which was then known as Kala Pahad, in 1924. Here the college was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi, who was a good friend of Rai Kedar Nath. However, during the Second World War, the college campus had to be given up to the British Wireless Experimental Centre.
During the Quit India Movement, a group of students belonging to the college joined the freedom struggle and ended up being jailed. In memory of these brave students, there is a plaque with their names inscribed on it near the college auditorium gate.
In 1950, the college was moved to its current location. On January 17, 1951, it was inaugurated by the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Following the death of Rai Kedarnath, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar acted as the Chairman of the Governing Body of Ramjas College.
At the city, state and national level the college has achieved a lot in the field of education, sports, and other activities under the University of Delhi, New Delhi.
In January 2004, Ramjas College was the first college ever to organize a Conference of Graduate Students of Economics from the SAARC countries. The college celebrated its Centennial Legacy in 2016 and completed its 100 years celebration in January 2017.
Under the University of Delhi, New Delhi, Ramjas College offers undergraduate courses of three years and postgraduate courses of two years in the fields of science, arts, and commerce.
The Department of Mathematics at Ramjas College is known as the best Department of Mathematics at the University of Delhi. In 2017, the Department organized a two-day International Conference on Mathematics & Applications (ICMA – 2017).
Ramjas College conducts several exchange programmes with the universities of several foreign countries. Certificate courses are also provided by an International Languages school in Asian and European Languages. In the college premises, examinations conducted by the Delhi University and various other courses are held. There is a centre of excellence (CIE) in the campus offering a platform for creative people who have outstanding academic skills, think in an innovative way and have a spirit to make a lasting contribution in improving the quality of life of people in general, as enlightened generative leaders.
Candidates can apply for admission to the college through an online application procedure to fill in their educational achievements and interests. Only candidates who have registered with the university are eligible for admission.
Before application, candidates should make sure that their percentage marks, i.e., best of four/PCB/PCM, the one that is applicable, is within the cut-off percentage as is declared by the college for admission to different courses.
