Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana was established in 1962 to serve the state of erstwhile Punjab.
In 1966, Haryana Agricultural University was carved out of PAU by an Act of Parliament in February 1970.
Later, in July 1970, Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidalya was established.
In 2006 the College of Veterinary Science was upgraded to become Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University (GADVASU) at Ludhiana.

Located in Ludhiana city (Punjab State) in north-west India at a distance of 316 km from New Delhi and is well connected by road and rail links
Spread over an area of 494 hectares at Ludhiana with an off-campus area of 1793 hectares
The university now has six constituent colleges, viz. College of Agriculture, PAU College of Agriculture Ballowal Saunkri, College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, College of Basic Sciences & Humanities, College of Community Science & College of Horticulture and Forestry, besides PAU Pre-Graduation Institutes of Agriculture at Gurdaspur and Bathinda
Presently the university, through 32 departments and 3 schools in the six constituent colleges, offers 43 Master's and 29 Ph.D. Programmes besides 11 under-graduate programmes at Ludhiana and outstations.
The university has on its rolls 2917 employees, out of which 771 comprise teaching-faculty and 2146 are non-teaching staff.
The university has 8 Research Stations, located at Ballowal Saunkhri (Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar), Gurdaspur, Faridkot, Bathinda, Abohar, Kapurthala, Usman (Taran Taran) and Dyal Bharang (Amritsar); 3 Fruit Research Stations, situated at Gangian (Hoshiarpur), Bahadurgarh (Patiala) and Jallowal & Lesriwal (Jalandhar); and 4 Seed Farms, located at Naraingarh (Fatehgarh Sahib), Ladhowal (Ludhiana), Nabha (Patiala) and Birsikhanwala (Faridkot).
The university has 18 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in districts- Amritsar, Bathinda, Faridkot, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Samrala (Ludhiana), Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Noor Mahal (Jalandhar), Kapurthala, Langroya (SBS Nagar), Mansa, Moga, Ropar, Patiala, Sangrur and Mukatsar Sahib.
The university also extends services to farmers through 14 Farmers' Advisory Service Centres (FASCs) in districts- Abohar (Fazilka), Amritsar, Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Noor Mahal (Jalandhar), Kapurthala, Tarntaran, Ropar, Patiala, Barnala, Sangrur, and one in Chandigarh.
