Established in 1973, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore or IIM Bangalore or IIMB is a premier institute in India offering courses in management and technology. It was set up with the active support of the IIM Society, the Government of Bengaluru, the Government of India and distinguished members of the Indian industry.
Indian Institute of Management Bangalore is an autonomous institute offering higher education in the field of management and technology. IIMB was set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the Government of India under Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2017.
Courses offered at the institute run under its own affiliation, i.e., Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. IIMB is recognized and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The institute has also been recognised as an Institute of National Importance (INI) by the Government of India. The ISO 9001:2008 Certification has been awarded to IIMB.
In order to improve the quality of management education in India and expand its reach, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, set up the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. IIMB is one of the first three institutes to be set up for the above-mentioned purpose.
The Chairman of the Council of IIM Bangalore is the Minister of Human Resource and Development, Government of India. The institute is managed by a board that is free from external control. The Board of Governors is in charge of its administration.
In 1972, after seeing the rise in demand for management graduates who were alumni of IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad, the first two IIMs that were set up, a committee was formed which had Ravi J. Matthaias as its head, which put forward a recommendation for setting up two more IIMs in the country.
However, the committee had the intention of setting up these two IIMs in order to cater to the growing needs of management graduates that were seen in the public sector, unlike the first two IIMs that were catering to the private sector.
Hence, IIM Bangalore was set up exclusively to meet the needs of the public sector enterprises.
For setting up IIM Bangalore, the Government of Karnataka made a contribution of ₹3 million (US$47,000) and also presented 100 acres (40 ha) of land without charging anything. N. S. Ramaswamy and T. A. Pai were appointed as director and chairman, respectively. On 28th October 1973, Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India inaugurated the institute.
Initially, the institute became operational from St. Joseph's College of Commerce and certain other buildings. The new institute was built in South Bangalore on Bannerghatta road.
Indian Institute of Management Bangalore offers diplomas in management for a period of two years, a Residential Executive Programme which is a full-time one-year programme, doctoral-level fellowship programmes and an ePost Graduate Programme in Management. IIM Bangalore also conducts several faculty developments and executive education programmes.
Students can get admission to this college by clearing the CAT (Common Admission Test) and the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) that is conducted every year.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2017 ranked IIM Bangalore in the third position and on an international level, the QS World University Rankings of 2018 placed it at number 49.
The European Foundation for Management Education (EFMD) has awarded IIM Bangalore with the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) accreditation.
Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs):
The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are currently twenty in number. These are autonomous public institutes that offer courses in management education and research in India. These institutes offer doctoral, postgraduate and executive education programmes.
Based on the recommendation of the Planning Commission, the IIMs were set up with the initiative of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. Under the Indian Societies Registration Act, all the Indian Institutes of Management are registered as societies.
All the IIMs are autonomous institutions and the day-to-day operations are carried out independently.
However, the IIM Council oversees the overall strategy and the administration of all IIMs.
India's Minister of Human Resource Development heads the IIM Council. The Council consists of the directors and chairpersons of all IIMs and also senior officials from the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India.
On 24 January 2017, the Union Cabinet approved the Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2017, according to which the IIMs were declared as institutes of national importance. This means that they will be able to grant degrees and make important changes in the institute as and when required.
On 28 July 2017, the IIM bill was passed by the Lok Sabha and on 19 December 2017, it was passed by the Rajya Sabha. On 31 December 2017, the IIM bill became an act after the receipt of the presidential assent. The names of the IIMs are listed below:
The flagship programme across all IIMs is the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP).
This offers the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM). These are equivalent to regular MBA programmes. Some IIMs offer to graduates with work experience a one-year Post Graduate Diploma Programme.
Some IIMs offer a doctoral programme, the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). This is globally considered to be equivalent to Ph.D. Most IIMs offer part-time programmes and short-term executive education/EMBA courses. Unique programmes are also conducted by certain IIMs.
