Periyar Maniammai University (PMU), Thanjavur was established in 1988.

This university is accredited by NAAC with ‘B’ Grade. It is also accredited by NBA of AICTE for four continuous terms.

The primary object of the college was on institutionalizing the lofty ideals of Periyar by paving the way for women’s emancipation by providing increased access to higher education in Science and Technology and encouraging their participation in social, national and global development.

Considering its academic excellence in teaching, research and extension programs and many socially relevant projects, the government of India/ MHRD had conferred the status of university on the college on the recommendation of the UGC, New Delhi in 2007.
