Nowgong College, Nagaon was established on 7th August, 1944. It is one of the pioneer colleges of Assam established with the permission from the University of Calcutta.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) Act, 1956. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade.

Nowgong College is situated at the heart of Nagaon city. The college is almost 120 Km away from Guwahati, the capital of Assam that is well connected by air, road and rail with the rest of the country.

It imparts Under graduate and Post Graduate level of education with about 90 faculty members, and offers major courses in all subjects in Arts, Commerce and Science stream.

It was established by founders like Jananeta Moti Ram Bora, Principal Sahityacharyya Jajneswar Sharma, some distinguished personalities, administrators, teachers and students, the college has produced many extra-ordinary talents and made a distinguished position in the academic, social and intellectual realm of the state.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Courses in Arts, Science & Commerce stream under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts, Science & Commerce stream under Gauhati University, Guwahati. It also offers some Career Oriented Courses / Add On Course. Besides this, Post Graduate, Degree, Diploma and Certificate Courses under convergence scheme Indira Gandhi National Open University, Delhi.

The college also has a Contact Centre of Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), Gauhati University for PG courses. Besides this, the college is running a Study Centre of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOPU), Guwahati.

  • The college has an attractive campus situated in secured and serene atmosphere suitable for learning
  • The college has separate individual departments for all subjects with young, dynamic faculty and non-teaching staff and getting a good results.
  • The college has well-equipped with Administrative Block, Academic Block, full-flagged Computer Laboratory, Auditorium, Common Room, Library, Hostel, Play Ground & Canteen within the campus.
  • The college library named "Mahendranath Maihangdang Dekaphukan Library" has played a significant role for the development of higher education in central Assam. The library has around 52000 nos. of books, 20 nos. of journals / magazines and many news papers and periodicals.
  • The college has a separate girls & boys hostel located in the college premises. It consists of four blocks with adequate facilities.
  • The college has two computer laboratories, one funded DST and the other by UGC. Both the laboratories provide internet facilities which can be availed by students and teachers for their academic purposes.
  • The college has an auditorium with a capacity of accommodating at least 800 audiences and all basic amenities of light sound, greenroom, etc. The formal meetings, social and cultural functions, intra and inter college competitions of music, dance, debate and quiz etc. take place in the auditorium.
  • An extension counter of Assam Gramin Bikash Bank has been opened in the college campus to facilitate financial transactions and other facilities for the college community especially the students.
  • The college has a gymnasium that focuses on physical fitness of students as it is believed that a sound mind resides only in a healthy physique. The students avail full benefit from the gymnasium during leisure time.
  • The college has a hygienic food joint for students and staff of the college. It also provides a comfortable environment for refreshment during their stipulated work-schedule. Nutritious food items with very reasonable prices have made the canteen accessible to students coming from different financial backgrounds.
  • The college has established an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to assure the quality of the college
  • Seminars are organized at departmental levels from time to time to enrich the level of knowledge of the students in the relevant field
  • State Government and the Central Government offers a number of scholarships to the meritorious students and the students belonging to SC / ST / OBC
