National Institute of Technology Tiruchirapalli, commonly known as NIT Trichy (formerly known as Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli), was established in 1964 to cater the needs of satisfactory higher education.
It is a public engineering institution situated near the heart city of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu and located in an impressive and pollution-free campus with panoramic green surroundings, elegant landscaping of 800 acres of land and has 16 departments.
Institute At A Glance:
In 1964, it was established as Regional Engineering College under the affiliation with University of Madras, Chennai.
The institute was started with a joint & cooperative venture of the Govt. of India & Govt. of Tamil Nadu in 1964 and it is recognized as an Institute of National Importance (INI), New Delhi by the Government of India under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007.
It is also recognized & approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.
In 2001, Anna University, Chennai was granted authority over REC Trichy. But this was temporary, however, as the 40-year collaboration between the Center and the State Governments for all the REC's finally dissolved.
Therefore, the centre upgraded all the REC's to National Institutes of Technology (NIT) and completely took control of them under the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
In 2002, former Minister of Human Resource Development Murali Manohar Joshi decided to upgrade the RECs to NITs with the goal of modeling each institute based on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but with roots in Indian culture.
In 2003, the institution was granted the status of "Deemed University" with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Govt. of India.
It was renamed the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli under Societies Registration Act XXVII of 195 and was finally granting degrees under its own name. In 2007, the National Institutes of Technology Act was passed, giving the NITs equal footing to the IITs in terms of pay scales, funding, etc.
At present, the institute offers 10 undergraduate and 22 graduate programs.
Undergraduate programs lead to the B.Tech degrees, while the graduate students and postgraduate students earn M.Tech, M.S. (by Research) and Ph. D degrees respectively. NITT also has a Management and Architecture School.
Admissions here for undergraduate students done through JEE (Main), graduate students through GATE in Engineering, CAT, and CET for Masters in Computer Applications and also All India Entrance Exam conducted by the admitting departments.
The institute organizes annual cultural and technical festivals: Pragyan (technical festival), Festember and NITTfest (cultural festivals) that attract participants from all over the country and abroad.
The institute has academic and research collaborations with universities and research centers in India and abroad including the United States and the United Kingdom and is undergoing accelerated growth through the World Bank-funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP).
The institute strictly follows the reservation policy declared by the Supreme Court of India, by which 27% of seats are reserved for OBC, 15% for SC, and 7.5% for ST.
The institute also accepts foreign nationals through scholarships awarded by the Government of India, and non-resident Indians through an independent scheme known as Direct Admission for Students Abroad that uses SAT scores.
About National Institutes of Technology (NITs):
The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are a group of premier federally-funded public engineering institutes in India.
They are governed by the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, which declared them as institutions of national importance alongside Indian Institutes of Technology.
These institutes of national importance receive special recognition from the Government of India. The NIT Council is the supreme governing body of India's National Institutes of Technology (NIT) system and all 31 NITs are funded by the Government of India.
These institutes are among the top-ranked engineering colleges in India and have one of the lowest acceptance rates for engineering institutes, of around 2 to 3 percent, second only to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India.
All NITs are autonomous which enables them to set up their own curriculum.
The language of instruction is English at all these institutes.
NITs offer degree courses in Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate levels in various branches of Engineering, Architecture, Management, and Science.
Admission to the undergraduate courses such as Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) Programs in NITs are through the highly competitive Joint Entrance Examination (Main).
Admission to postgraduate courses is through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering for Master of Technology (M.Tech.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) programs, Common Admission Test for Master of Business Administration (MBA) program and NIMCET for Master of Computer Applications (MCA) program.
Courses offered & Achievements:
As National Institute of Technology, the Institute has a responsibility of providing high-quality education in Engineering and Technology to produce competent technical manpower for the country.
The institute offers the undergraduate program in Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in disciplines of Engineering and Technology and Postgraduate program in Master of Technology (M.Tech) and Master in Management (MBA) along with research programs leading to M.Sc and Ph.D.
The Institute acquires a national character having 50% student intake from the State of Bhopal and the rest of other states/union territories of the country.
The admissions to the B.Tech programs run by the institute are very competitive having acceptance ratio nearly 2-3%. Students were admitted on the basis of All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) till 2012 but from 2013 the admission is based on Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) conducted across India.
Admissions to the M.Tech programs are by the GATE exam conducted by the IITs and IISc. The postgraduate admission is on the basis of research and interviews by the appropriate screening committees.
The college has been received numbers of an award in publication, offering scholarship also awarded by the different societies within different fields.
MANIT is ranked 61 among engineering colleges of India by National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2017
NIRF rankings have become a benchmark because of their independent, honest & flavorless review.
Due to an intake of top 1%ile students into its UG program, NIT Bhopal has topped the NIRF 2017 rankings beating all other Institutes in the engineering category.
Apart from the above, to make students well aware of their field, there are student chapters of internationally acclaimed societies.
