National Institute of Technology Calicut was established in 1961 as Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC), it was transformed into a National Institute of Technology in the year 2002.

Commonly known as NIT Calicut or NITC, is an autonomous and one of the 31 institutions of Insitute of National Importance under the NIT Act 2007. The institute is fully funded by the Govt. of India.

CREC, the ninth of its kind and the first one to be established during the Third Five-Year Plan period. Until the formation of Calicut University in 1963, the institute was affiliated with Kerala University, Thiruvananthapuram.

Later, in June 2002, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, accorded NIT status to REC Calicut and granting it academic and administrative autonomy.

The main aim of the institute is to provide higher technical education and conduct research in the various branches of Engineering, Science, Technology and Management.

The institute is situated in a picturesque landscape at the foothills of the Western Ghats, NITC is located about 22 kilometres north-east of Calicut City.

At present, the institute offers bachelors, masters and doctoral degree programs in Engineering, Science, Technology and Management. With its proactive collaborations with a multitude of research organizations, academic institutions and industries, the institute has set a new style for its functioning under the NIT regime.

Currently, NITC offering 10 UG programs with a total intake of 1049 and 30 PG programs including MBA with a total intake of 666. Doctoral level with over 517 research scholars registered and there has also been a substantial increase in the volume of research papers and patents produced.

The institute is a fully residential institution, the campus houses academic buildings, research labs, hostels, residences and other amenities among its infrastructure.

Admissions here for the undergraduate courses through the Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) conducted by CBSE, New Delhi.

Admissions to some other autonomous national level technical institutes (called Deemed University) is also through JEE Main.

Admissions to the graduate M.Tech and PhD courses are primarily based on scores in the GATE exam, conducted by the IITs and admissions to the MCA programme is done through the NIMCET conducted by the NITs. Admissions to MBA course is based on the Common Admission Test (CAT) score.
