In 2008, National Law University, Delhi, also called NLUD, was established under the leadership of Ranbir Singh. This Law University came into existence after the passing of the National Law University Act, 2008. This was the initiative of the High Court of Delhi.
National Law University, Delhi is approved and recognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI), New Delhi and University Grants Commission (UGC) under Act, 1956. It was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.59 on a 4 Point Scale in the 1st cycle) in 2017.
NLUD aims at fostering the objectives and the rule of law enshrined in the Constitution of India and also promoting ethical and legal values. Among all the top law colleges in India, National Law University, Delhi, has been ranked 19th.
National Law University, Delhi was built on the model of providing a five-year law degree. This proposal was laid forward and proposed by the Bar Council of India. As per the statute, the Chief Justice of the High Court of Delhi will operate as the University Chancellor, while on the other hand, the Vice-Chancellor will operate as the chief administrator.
National Law University, Delhi, was founded under Act No. 1 of 2008 of NCT Delhi in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. It was founded in 2008 under the leadership of Ranbir Singh, who is also the Founder-Director/Vice-Chancellor of Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad. NLUD was inaugurated by the President of India, Pratibha Patil.
In 2008, the institute started functioning from a temporary building. The college became fully functional in 2010 when the construction of the building was completed.
NLUD offers a B.A & LL.B. program, an honors in intellectual property law, which is an undergraduate course of five years. Seventy seats are allocated for Indians and ten seats for foreign nationals. It also offers an LL.M program for a period of one year.
NLUD also offers postgraduate diploma programs in IPR and patent law, judging and court management and urban environmental management. It also conducts programmes on the completion of which Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is given.
Students who are eligible for admission are selected through AILET or CLAT which the NLUD conducts every year. Students have to register with NLUD to seek admission.
Candidates who have already obtained an LL.B. degree from a foreign university can apply for a two-year or one-year bridge course. In such cases, the two-year bridge course is for candidates who have obtained a three-year LL.B. degree and the one-year bridge course is for candidates who have obtained a four-year LL.B. degree.
