On 10th January 1930, Lord Irwin established the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS). Located in a unique location in New Delhi, the college is surrounded by Ferozshah Kotla, Daryaganj, Chandni Chowk and Connaught Place.
The college is affiliated to the University of Delhi, New Delhi. The college is also recognized and approved by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH), New Delhi.

The first unit of Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences called the Lok Nayak Hospital, earlier known as Irwin Hospital was established by Lord Irwin on 10th January 1930. At that time, the Indian Medical Service was dominated by the British.
Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences derived its name from the first Union Minister of Education and Scientific Research of independent India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The first batch of BDS was started in November 1983 and in 2007 MDS courses were introduced in the college.
The dental wing was separated from MAMC in 2003 as Maulana Azad Dental College and Hospital. The Government of NCT of Delhi granted it an independent status. The college got the status of an autonomous institute in 2006. Now it was renamed as Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences.
In the field of dental sciences, the institute has been declared as one of the best dental institutions. Under the Government of NCT of Delhi, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences has been announced as a 'Center of Excellence'. The Outlook magazine has ranked it no.1 in the list of dental colleges in India.
The prestigious ‘FICCI award for operational excellence’ was awarded to Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences in healthcare. A five years undergraduate (BDS) programme and three years postgraduate (MDS) programme with various specializations are offered at the college.
Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences has a tie-up with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.

Under the University of Delhi, the college follows its own selection process which is based on merit. Through an online application process, the college offers a space for students to fill in their academic achievements and interests.
An entrance examination is conducted by the CBSE which serves as the qualifying examination for getting admission to the college. As per government rules, fifteen percent of the seats are reserved for the SC (5 seats), seven and a half percent of the seats are reserved for the ST (2 seats) and twenty-seven percent of the seats are reserved for the OBC (9 seats).
