Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata was established in 1947 holds the distinction of being the oldest marine engineering college of India.

The institute was previously known as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training.

In 1994, it was renamed as Marine Engineering and Research Institute. Affiliated to Jadavpur University, it offers under graduate programme.
