In 1956, Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) was established in Delhi but it became operational on 24th October 1959 with the initiative of the then Union Home Minister Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant. Located at Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, it is named after Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India and a freedom fighter.
Affiliated to the University of Delhi, New Delhi, Maulana Azad Medical College has been approved and recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi.
The history of the college can be traced back to the year 1936. This was when India was under the British rule. However, in 1939, the 2nd World War started, so the plan to set up a new medical college was canceled.
Near Safdarjung's tomb, some barracks were swiftly constructed, during the 2nd World War. This medical centre was set up for the American troops who were then fighting in this region. The medical centre was handed over by the Americans to the Government of India after the 2nd World War came to an end.
Currently, the college houses the Safdarjung Hospital. Initially, it was planned that it would be taken over by the Irwin Hospital, which is now the Lok Nayak Hospital. However, later the Central Health Ministry started running it directly under the ownership of CGHS.
The India Today Magazine has ranked it in the fourth position and Outlook India has ranked it in the eleventh position among all the medical colleges in India.
Currently, Maulana Azad Medical College offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and add-on fellowship courses in medical streams. The college also has a tie-up with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, under which courses are offered in the distance mode.
Maulana Azad Medical College has tie-ups with several top institutions and universities across the globe and conducts research partnerships and exchange programmes with them.
In order to get admission to Maulana Azad Medical College, a candidate has to qualify in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE) which are conducted at the national level. To apply to this college, students must have scored at least 60% in the 12th board exams.
