Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Gwalior was established in August 1957 by the Ministry of Education & Culture, Govt. of India and managed by Memorandum of Association (MOA)

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
 
The college is affiliated with Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Gwalior conferred the status of a “Deemed to be University”  on 21st September 1995 and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

It is also recognized and approved by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bhopal and re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A++" Grade (CGPA Score 3.79 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 28th March 2017.

The institution is committed to providing quality higher education in art and its allied fields, to all the students desiring to do so. The Institute also works towards creating art awareness in the society by various means.

It is a co-educational Institute, provided a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Gwalior played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The Institute started as an affiliated college of the Vikram University, Ujjain and then came to the folds of Jiwaji University, Gwalior in 1964.

The Institute was given the status of National importance, and hence it was renamed as Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education in1973.

In recognition of its unique status and character and to facilitate its further growth, the college was conferred the status of an ’Autonomous College’ of Jiwaji University, Gwalior in 1982.

Hence, Institute was again renamed as Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education. The Institute is the first “Deemed to be University” in the field of Physical Education in India and enjoys a unique place of its kind in South Asia.

Since 2000, the Institute comes under the administrative jurisdiction of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govt. of India. It is fully funded by the Ministry for plan and non-plan expenditure.

The main purpose of establishing this Institute was to upgrade the status of Physical Education by producing quality teachers and leaders through graduate and post-graduate courses.

Three years Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) was started in 1957 and two years Master of Physical Education (MPE) in 1963.

To bring it at par with other professional degree courses, as also match the International standards the duration of the course was extended to four years integrated course and the course was renamed as Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed.) Integrated.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government.

The college had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities under Jiwaji University, Gwalior.

It is also an ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 18001:2007 Certifications through United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

The college has established three subsidiary centres: the Academic Staff College, the North East Regional Centre and the PYKKA Resource Centre.

The Institute has opened its North East off-campus at Guwahati (Assam) from the academic session 2009-10 with the approval of Government of India.

This Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of Assam on 14th May 2010 for the establishment of the Regional Centre.

The college offers four years of the program in Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) streams with various specializations and offers two years of postgraduate courses in Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) with various specializations.

In 1980, the then college reached yet another milestone and became the first institution in India to have offered the one-year programme of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Physical Education.

Ph.D. programme in Physical Education was started in 1998.

Students are also admitted for various certificate/diploma/PG Diploma courses in different disciplines of Physical Education and Sports.

University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by Jiwaji University, Gwalior and various other examinations are held in the college premises.

Admissions here also done through Govt. of M.P. online portal by the Department of Higher Education M.P. and hence gives a transparent and fair method of admission.
