King George's Medical University, also known as KGMC was established in 1906. However, it became operational only in 1911 only with the initiative of King George. After the Government of Uttar Pradesh passed an act on 16th September 2002, it was converted into a university.

King George's Medical University is approved and recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi. By an act of the Parliament, the institute was recognised as an Institute of National Importance (INI). It was also recognised by the Dental Council of India (DCI) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Act, 1956.

Initially, King George's Medical University was under the control of the Government of the United Provinces. Allahabad University certified the degrees given to the students who passed out from this university. Later, Lucknow University took over the reigns of the college in 1921.

Through the Uttar Pradesh Chhatrapati Shahuji Medical University Act, 2002, the college was upgraded to a university and named Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which had formed the government in 2002, led by Mayawati.

In October 2003, through the Uttar Pradesh Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (Second Amendment) Act, the university was once again named George's Medical University (KGMU). Again in 2007, it was renamed as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) after Mayawati got back the power and the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election was won by the BSP. Then in 2012, it was renamed as George's Medical University (KGMU) after the Akhilesh Yadav government came back to power.

The Week has ranked the university in the 13th position among all the medical institutions in India. Under the Government of NCT of Uttar Pradesh, King George's Medical University has been declared as a 'Center of Excellence'. The university is rated as one of the best medical universities in the field of Medical Sciences.

Currently, King George's Medical University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and add-on fellowship courses in medical streams.

King George's Medical University has tie-ups with several top institutions and universities across the globe and conducts research partnerships and exchange programmes with them.

In order to get admission to this college, a candidate has to qualify in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) after examining their percentage marks in the 12th board exams, which is specified by the university.

The Health Centre is located on the campus for inpatient & outpatient treatment for minor & major illness. All minor ailments are treated at Health Centre as outpatient
The Health Centre offers round the clock Out Patient, In-patient treatment, and the Emergency Care. The special care is also available in the areas of Medicine and Gynecology, Dermatology, Eye, and Psychiatry. It has a Clinical Laboratory which is computerized and doing routine and special investigations
A futuristic, new age medical learning, discovery and research facility are available for the students
The Health Centre has an Operation Theatre. Surgeries & routine surgical cases are being done here
It has 24 hours Ambulance Service for emergency services for outside referrals. There is a night duty Doctor to look after emergencies in the night and other patients particularly student’s community
The Consultants are attending the cases referred by Medical Officers and Area Medical Officers on appointment basis at the time slot allotted to them
Hi-Tech theory class was taken through "Touch On Cloud" Software to the Students with iPad and Laptops
The outpatients were explained and counseled about their problems through the i-Pad explanation with pictures. In order to understand the basic relation between Sugar & Dental Caries as well as improper brushing technique and Periodontal diseases, this i-Pad counseling got overall success criteria
Mentor-Mentee system is a program designed exclusively for students to interact with one faculty who helps the student to solve academic, and other personal problems. Mentor, in turn, interacts with Deputy Chief Mentor and Chief Mentor for further measures. Apart from this, counseling is provided by professional counselors
Department of Periodontics has conducted the "Laser Hands-on Course" for all the CRRIs who posted in the department and also given demon in Vegetables and patients with appreciation Certificate
The Root Canal Treatment (RCT) has been done under the "Endodontic Microscope" in Post Graduate Clinic of Conservative and Endodontic Department
Annual Cultural week and Sports week are arranged to bring the talents of the students to the fore while prizes won at intercollegiate tournaments speaks volumes especially the group dance troupe
