Kasturba Medical College (KMC) was established on 30th June 1953, as a constituent unit of the Manipal University, Manipal under the guidance of T.M.A. Pai. Self-affiliated with the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, it is approved and recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi.

For their clinical training, as Mangalore was the place where the students had to go, only the pre-clinical section was started at the Kasturba Medical College. Kasturba Medical College became an independent institution when the clinical programme was started in 1969.

The government of India granted Deemed University status to Manipal University (formerly known as MAHE) and after this Kasturba Medical College came under its wing.

The Week ranked it at number 9 and the Outlook Magazine ranked it at number 10 among all the medical colleges in India. It was one of the first hospitals in India which along with Manipal Hospital Bangalore (MHB) in December 2011 received the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP).

At present, Kasturba Medical College offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and add-on fellowship courses in medical streams. Malaysian Medical Council, the ECFMG, the Australian Medical Council and the General Medical Council, all recognise Kasturba Medical College and the MBBS degree given by it.

Kasturba Medical College has tie-ups with several top institutions and universities across the globe and conducts research partnerships and exchange programmes with them.

Students can get admission to this college only after qualifying in the Karnataka - CET. The cut-off marks for getting admission to the college is decided by the college itself.

  • The Health Centre has an Operation Theatre. Surgeries & routine surgical cases are being done here
  • It has 24 hours Ambulance Service for emergency services for outside referrals. There is a night duty Doctor to look after emergencies in the night and other patients particularly student’s community  
  • The Consultants are attending the cases referred by Medical Officers and Area Medical Officers on appointment basis at the time slot allotted to them
