Kalinagar Mahavidyalaya, Kalinagarhat was established in 1985 & its s affiliated to the West Bengal State University, Barasat.
The College started with the help of the local Marketing Society, the Mazdoor Union and some enthusiastic academics of the locality.
Kalinagar Mahavidyalaya was founded with the express purpose of providing an opportunity of higher education to the boys and girls of the remote Sunderbans area.
At first Kalinagar Mahavidyalaya started with only 3 teachers, 12 non-teaching staffs and a mere 47 students. Today, the total numbers of students are more than 1000. Currently, there are 8 Full-time teachers, 20 Part-time teachers and 19 Non-teaching Staffs (full-time and casual included).
Kalinagar Mahavidyalaya was founded in 1985 on the first day of the month of May, in one of the remote islands of the Sunderban. Now a world heritage site, the college stood as the sole torch bearer of higher education among the local tribals, caste Hindus and minorities. Riziculture & Pisciculture in the river 'Betni' is the primary occupation for most of the poverty stricken families of the island, especially after the devastating AILA cyclone.
Today as the college enters its 34th year; it looks back to a nostalgic past starting with only 47 students often hailing from first generation learner families till date, it has traversed a long way. Struggling against all odds, both natural and material, persisting even today the college tries to prepare itself for a challenging future.
Formerly the college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta, now it is under the West Bengal State University, Barasat. This Government Aided college has received both 2f & 12b affiliation from the University Grants Commission.
The college now has about 1500 students, 9 Assistant Professors (of whom 1 [Associate Professor] serves as the Teacher-in-Charge) and 1 Librarian. Besides there are 2 Contractual Whole Time, 13 Part Time and 5 Guest Teachers. The total number of regular and casual non- teaching staffs are 9 and 17 respectively.
Since inception the number of departments was 6, at present the number has increased to 11 (Honours in English, Bengali, Sanskrit, History, Geography, Education and Philosophy; General course in Political Science, Geography, Economics, Computer Science and Physical Education).
