In 1960, Ishwar Deshmukh College of Physical Education by the Citizens Education Society which was established by Late Adv. Shri Ishwarbabuji Deshmukh.

In the beginning, the college was then known as “Training Institute for Physical Education” and was running C.P.Ed. D.P.Ed. and then H.D.Ed. course. These Courses were run by the Government of Maharashtra.

Later in 1983, as a policy matter of the State government, the institute was affiliated to the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Nagpur. Then, college running B.P.Ed. (One Year), B.P.E. (3 Years), M.P.Ed. (2Years) courses under this affiliating university.

The college is recognized and approved by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bhopal and also by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B+" Grade - (in 1st Cycle) on 28th February 2005.

At present, the college offers one year Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P.Ed) and three years of Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) courses for those who have completed their graduation with minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.

Students here are admitted who completed their graduation from recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the Degree level. But Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled to a relaxation 5% marks ineligibility for admission.

The college also offers two years Master of Physical Education (M.Ed.) course for those who have completed their B.P.Ed. or BPE or qualifying degree with the minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.

Students here are admitted who completed their graduation from recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the graduation level. The main objective of the college is to provide the students with the adequate knowledge, skills, and opportunity to be a physically educated person for lifetime; to inculcate the ability to demonstrate in different aspects of physical activity using concept of awareness in Physical education; to provide opportunity for personal, social, physical, ethical development to give better services to the community and the nation; to promote sports culture in the society; to promote facilities for development of Research in Physical Education.

Various teaching and learning techniques are being used by the faculty to impart knowledge and skills to students at Ishwar Deshmukh College of Physical Education in its various departments.
