Institute of Hotel Management, Gangtok was established in 1990 by Ministry of Tourism, Government of India and Government of Sikkim as Food Craft Institute with the aim for expansion and promotion of Hotel and Hospitality education, to fulfill the requirement of manpower in the hotel industry.

The college is affiliated to National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology & Indira Gandhi National Open University.

With the basic aim to provide job-oriented and professional higher education to students of all three streams Sciences, Arts & Commerce and to promote and popularise hospitality education according to the industry demand, all the programmes offered by the Institute are significantly designed.

In terms of placement IHM Gangtok has secured 5th position.
