The institute was established in 2001.

The hotel management institute is affiliated to the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT), the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Government of India, New Delhi.

IHM Shillong offers courses in the field of hotel management at the undergraduate level.

It imparts Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Hospitality and Hotel Administration, a three-year full time program and trade diploma programs in various streams of hotel management, which are one and half-year courses.

Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition Shillong has a number of modern amenities for the overall development of its students.
