Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, also called IIT Roorkee or IITR, was established in 1847 by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason in British India.
Earlier known as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering (1853–1948) and the University of Roorkee (1948–2001), it is an engineering college which is located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India.
The institute was given university status in 1949, and in 2001, it was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), thus becoming the seventh Indian Institute of Technology.
The institute was started in 1845 as a training centre for the local youth so that they could assist in public works. It was officially recognized in 1847.
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is a Deemed University. The All India Council for Teacher Education (AICTE), New Delhi has also approved and recognized it.
The Government of India has recognised it as an Institute of National Importance (INI). The Government of India issued an ordinance on 21st September 2001 and declared the institute as the seventh Indian Institute of Technology, giving it its current name, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. The ordinance was remodelled into a parliamentary act to give the status of "Institution of National Importance" to IIT Roorkee.
IIT Roorkee has made a mark in providing technical education in a country like India which is in need of technical know-how. By making remarkable contributions in several areas of technological development, it has secured a rank among the best engineering colleges of the world.
The institute is famous for its dominant entrepreneurial culture and its alumni who have contributed immensely to the development of India by laying the foundation of social and technological ventures inside India and also outside it.
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee offers programmes in twenty-one disciplines in the fields of engineering, humanities and social sciences, applied sciences and management. The programmes lay a strong emphasis on technological and scientific research and education.
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee awards B.Tech and M.Tech degrees in mechanical, civil, chemical, engineering, electrical and materials science.
The institute also offers M.Sc.
degrees in cognitive science, physics, mathematics, and chemistry. Ph.D. courses are conducted in science and engineering disciplines, such as biomedical, chemical, computer science, civil, mechanical, electrical, materials science, earth science, cognitive sciences, mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
The institute is famous for the awards that the alumni have won over the years. The Padma awards were won by ten alumni and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology were won by twenty-five alumni.
The alumni of the institute consist of the chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, 7 chairmen of the Indian Railway Board, chairman of University Grants Commission (India), more than a 100 secretary-level officers in the Government of India, members of the Parliament and governors of states of India.
The alumni also consist of vice-chancellors and chancellors of prominent Indian Universities, six directors of the Indian Institutes of Technology, 2 presidents of the Confederation of Indian Industry and presidents of scientific and engineering organizations, e.g., the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Indian Institution of Engineers and the Indian National Science Academy.

Core Values:
Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) provide higher education in India.
These are autonomous public institutes. These institutes are governed as per the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The Act has formally announced them as centres of national importance. The Act also specifies their framework for governance, powers, duties, etc.
The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists 23 institutes located at Ropar, Palghat, Dhanbad, Bhilai, Delhi, Dharwad, Jodhpur, Goa, Jammu, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Mumbai, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Indore, Roorkee, Mandi, Patna, and Tirupati.
The IIT Council links each IIT to the other as these are autonomous institutions. The IIT Council oversees their administration.
The ex-officio Chairperson of the IIT Council is the Union HRD Minister. For undergraduate admissions, the IITs have a common admission process, the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced. Before 2013, the common admission process was called IIT-JEE.
The older IITs (Madras, Bombay, Kharagpur, Delhi, Kanpur, Roorkee, Dhanbad, Varanasi and Guwahati) administer the post-graduate level programs. They award the MS and M.Tech degrees in engineering. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is conducted for MS and M.Tech admissions.
Other than offering MS, B.Tech and M.Tech programs, IITs also award M.Sc degrees in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry; Ph.D.; MBA; etc. In order to get admission to these courses, students have to clear the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED), Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) and Common Admission Test (CAT).
