Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Thiruvananthapuram is an Autonomous institution was established in August 2008, which is a premier institute dedicated to scientific research and science education of international standards.
The institute was established by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and run under the category of Institute of National Importance (INI), to promote quality education and research in basic sciences.
It is one of the premier public institutions established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.
It is self-affiliated with Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.
IISER-TVM is located on the campus of the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram (CET). A site of 200 acres (0.81 km2) for establishing a permanent campus has been identified at Vithura, at the foothills of the Ponmudi hills of the Western Ghats, about 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram.
The institute aims to provide high-quality education in modern science, integrating it with outstanding research at the undergraduate level itself, and develop a spirit of research cutting across disciplines.
It is an autonomous self-affiliated co-educational institute which is awarding its own Masters and Doctoral degrees, providing a regular course which is located in an urban part of Thiruvananthapuram played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
IISER-TVM has initiated a 5 years Integrated Masters program, Doctoral program (Ph.D.), and an Integrated Doctoral (Int. Ph.D.) program in an intellectually vibrant atmosphere of research.
Apart from the college is also offers skills in areas such as scientific inquiry, problem-solving, communication skills, computational sciences, electronics and instrumentation and workshop practices.

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) were created in 2006.
The institutes were created by the Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), under The National Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2010 (an amendment of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007), which was passed by the Rajya Sabha on 30 April 2012.
Soon after the announcement, two of these Institutes at Pune and Kolkata, respectively, was started in 2006. This was followed by an Institute at Mohali (2007) and at Bhopal and Thiruvananthapuram in 2008.
Each IISER is a degree-granting autonomous institution with a prime focus to integrate science education and research, with a motive of attracting bright students and world-class faculty.
IISERs are destined to become Science Institutes of the highest caliber and reach the prestigious position in the global setting that IISc, IIMs, IITs, and NITs presently enjoy.

Student selection is highly competitive, with only KVPY fellows, students in the IIT-JEE merit list, and students in the top one percent of the respective boards eligible to apply.
