Established on 13th November 1961, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta or IIM Calcutta or IIMC is a joint effort of the MIT Sloan School of Management, the Ford Foundation, the Government of Kolkata and the Government of India.
The Government of India under the Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2017 the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) established it as a premier institute that was autonomous in nature with the intention of providing higher education in the field of management and technology.

IIMC is recognized and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The Government of India has also recognised it as an Institute of National Importance (INI). IIM Calcutta is ISO 9001:2008 certified.
With a view to improve the quality of management education in India and to spread it across the country, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India set up Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. IIMC is one of the first IIMs to be set up in the country.
The Chairman of the Council of IIM is the Minister of Human Resource and Development, Government of India. The Board of Governors is responsible for the control and administration of each of the IIMs. Hence, it can be called a board-managed institution that is free from the interference of external bodies.
IIM Calcutta can be called one of the best B-schools in the world because of the number of accreditations that the institute has received. It is a triple-accredited business school, the only one in India.
IIM Calcutta has been accredited by the most credible B-school accreditation associations worldwide: EQUIS, AMBA, and AACSB. In this regard, it is one among the only 5 in Asia and 74 around the world. A member of the Global Alliance in Management Education (CEMS), it is the only business school in this category.
After the Indian independence in 1947, the charge of being the driving force of the nation's development was entrusted to the Planning Commission.
As India grew rapidly post-independence, the Planning Commission in the late 1950s faced issues in finding competent managers to run the public sector enterprises. These public sector enterprises were being set up in the country as a part of its industrial policy.
In order to ease the situation, in 1959, Professor George Robbins from the University of California was invited by the Planning Commission to help in the setting up of an institute of management studies at an all India level. With his recommendations, it was decided by the Indian Government that two elite institutes of management would be set up in India in the name of Indian Institutes of Management.
Thus, on 13 November 1961, the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was the first IIM that was set up in India. It was a joint initiative of the Indian industry, the Government of West Bengal, the MIT Sloan School of Management and the Ford Foundation.
IIM Calcutta started operation in the initial years from Emerald Bower, Barrackpur Trunk Road, Kolkata. In 1975, the institute was moved to its new campus. Morarji Desai laid the foundation stone of the campus at Joka.
Indian Institute of Management Calcutta offers diplomas in management for a period of two years and a Residential Executive Programme which is a full-time one-year programme. IIMC also offers doctoral level fellowship programmes and an ePost Graduate Programme in Management. The institute also conducts several faculty developments and executive education programmes.
Students seeking admission to the college should clear the CAT (Common Admission Test) and GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) conducted every year.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has conferred the status of "College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)" to IIMC. In 2017, the National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked IIMC in the third position among all management colleges in India. In the international scenario, at the QS World University Rankings of 2018, IIM Calcutta was ranked in the 94th position.

Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs):
The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are currently twenty in number.
These are autonomous public institutes that offer courses in management education and research in India. These institutes offer doctoral, postgraduate and executive education programmes.
Based on the recommendation of the Planning Commission, the IIMs were set up with the initiative of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. Under the Indian Societies Registration Act, all the Indian Institutes of Management are registered as societies.
All the IIMs are autonomous institutions and the day-to-day operations are carried out independently. However, the IIM Council oversees the overall strategy and the administration of all IIMs.
India's Minister of Human Resource Development heads the IIM Council. The Council consists of the directors and chairpersons of all IIMs and also senior officials from the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India.
On 24 January 2017, the Union Cabinet approved the Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2017, according to which the IIMs were declared as institutes of national importance. This means that they will be able to grant degrees and make important changes in the institute as and when required.
On 28 July 2017, the IIM bill was passed by the Lok Sabha and on 19 December 2017, it was passed by the Rajya Sabha. On 31 December 2017, the IIM bill became an act after the receipt of the presidential assent. The names of the IIMs are listed below:
The flagship programme across all IIMs is the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP).
This offers the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM). These are equivalent to regular MBA programmes. Some IIMs offer to graduates with work experience a one-year Post Graduate Diploma Programme.
Some IIMs offer a doctoral programme, the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). This is globally considered to be equivalent to Ph.D. Most IIMs offer part-time programmes and short-term executive education/EMBA courses. Unique programmes are also conducted by certain IIMs.
