Institute of Medical Sciences - Banaras Hindu University (IMS-BHU) is one of the three institutes of Banaras Hindu University comprises three faculties, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dental Sciences and Faculty of Ayurveda.

Established in 1960 as a College of Medical Sciences with the nine departments of Modern Medicine, 1 department in Indian Medicine, and eight departments of Ayurveda. Since 1971, the College of Medical Sciences was upgraded to Institute of Medical Sciences and the Post Graduate Institute of Indian Medicine was merged with IMS.

At present, the institute has 33 departments of Modern Medicine including 10 departments of Super Specialities, 4 departments of Dentistry, 11 departments of Ayurveda and School of Nursing.

The institute is affiliated to Banaras Hindu University and offers medical and paramedical courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

With the approval of DM and MCh courses in 10 Super specialities in 1976, further growth of postgraduate education was continued. In 1978, the existing faculty was bifurcated into the Faculty of Ayurveda and Faculty of Medicine to facilitate their independent growth.

MBBS training was recognised both by the General Medical Council (GMC)-UK, Dental Council of India (DCI), New Delhi and Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi.

Admissions here are made on all India basis and on the basis of merit through the qualifying entrance examinations.

The campus of IMS lies at the front part of a university. The campus contains the medical college, the hospital, the student and resident hostels, the staff quarters, a post office, a temple (BHU Vishwanathji), playgrounds and sporting fields.
