International Institute of Information Technology, Bengaluru was popularly known as IIIT-B was established on 15th September 1999.

IIIT-Bengaluru is promoted by the by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of Karnataka and also managed by a Governing Body with S Gopalakrishnan (Kris), executive co-chairman, Infosys Ltd., as the chairperson.

The institute was conferred Deemed University status under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act 1956 and it is recognized and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.

It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

The aim of the Institute is to contribute to the IT world by focusing on education and research, entrepreneurship and innovation also offering training oriented towards producing highly qualified practitioners and researchers.

It is a co-educational state Govt. and self-financed Institute, provided a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Bengaluru played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

Indian Institute of Information Technology started with its campus at International Tech Park (ITPL). In August 2003, IIIT-B relocated to its present campus in Electronics City.

The Institute is registered as a not-for-profit society funded jointly by the Government of Karnataka and the IT industry.

The Institute offers Five Years Integrated M.Tech., M.Tech., M.S. (Research) and Ph.D. programs in the field of Information Technology for students who have passed or are appearing for Senior Secondary (Plus Two) examination with Mathematics or equivalent subject.

The students were selected through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted every year. Admission to these programmes is through JEE Advanced.

The institute offers postgraduate degrees awarding Master of Technology (M.Tech.) and Master of Science (M.Sc. (Research) in various engineering fields, as well as M.Sc. in Basic Sciences, Ph.D. courses in various fields are also offered.

The course structure followed in all the programmes at the IIITB follow the Choice-based Credit System (CBCS).

The minimum qualification for Integrated M.Tech. is Plus Two (or equivalent). Admissions to the flagship M.Tech. the program is solely on the basis of performance at the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.

The minimum qualification for M.Tech., M.S., and Ph.D. programs is a four-year bachelor's degree in Engineering. Admission to M.S. and Ph.D. program is done by an online exam followed by personal interview.

The Institute has been conducted outreach programs like EXCITE program to motivate high school children on Information Technology also conducted a Special Training Program (STP) on IT under funding from Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt of India and Infosys Ltd.
