Established in 1954, the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai, is also known as IHM Mumbai. It is an institute that offers education in the hospitality industry.
It can be called the first of its kind as it was founded under the leadership of Late Smt. Lilavati Munshi by the All India Women’s Central Food Council in South East Asia. IHM Mumbai is an autonomous institute which is a joint collaboration between the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra.
IHM Mumbai is affiliated with the National Council for Hotel Management (NCHMCT), Noida. The institute is accredited by the International Accreditation Organization (IAO).
The institute was established with an aim to enhance the nutritional status of an average individual so that they start embracing a more balanced diet and ditch the high-cereal diet.
Leela N Jog set up a chain of restaurants, Annapoornas, throughout India, under the name of All India Women’s Central Food Council. These restaurants were mainly set up in the metropolitan cities to provide snacks and foods which had to be nutritionally sound and economic.
However, the issue was how these Annapoornas could be run on a self-financing foundation. This is when IHM Mumbai took birth. It is a training institute that was set up to meet the demands of these Annapoornas. In 1954, the classes commenced at Bhavan’s College Campus, Andheri with six students.
The complete financial responsibility of the hotel management institute was taken over by the Central Government in 1979. IHM Mumbai offers undergraduate, diploma and add-on certificate courses in hotel management streams.
For over fifty years, IHM Mumbai has been offering high-quality courses in hotel and catering. It has made a name for itself at the global and national level and has been providing good quality personnel for the hotel and catering industry both abroad and in India.
IHM Mumbai is regarded as one of the best institutes providing hospitality education in the country.
The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India has awarded the institute several times with the Award of Excellence for the Best Tourism Educational Institute.
Under Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, the institute offers distance education in the streams of hotel management.
A Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is conducted for students seeking admission to the college. An online counseling is done by IGNOU, New Delhi, and the National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology, Noida for the students after they clear the JEE.
