In 1998, the university was established as the Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology by Directorate of Training and Technical Education, Govt of N.C.T of Delhi as the first engineering college for women only and it was the only constituent college of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University from 2002-13.
Later, in 2013, the institute gained autonomy and became the first women's technical university in India established by Govt. of Delhi and therefore renamed as Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW).
At present, the university has four branches of engineering, namely Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical and Automation Engineering, Information Technology and Architecture and Planning.
