Established in 1936 by Ahmedabad Education Society (AES), H L College of Commerce, Ahmedabad is affiliated with Gujarat University, Ahmedabad.

It is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 2nd February 2012 under Act, 1956 and re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade in 2nd Cycle.

The aim of the college to further hone the student's intellectual acumen, personal discipline, cultural sensitivity and moral conviction.

It is a co-educational college, providing regular courses in which is located in the urban part of Ahmedabad played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government.

Shri Amritlal Hargovandas Sheth and Shri Tribhovandas Hargovandas gave a munificent donation to the sacred memory of their father Shri Hargovandas Lakshmichand, Sheth Shri Kasturbhai Lalbhai to start this college.

H.L. College of Commerce offers instruction in both Gujarati and English at the Bachelor degree level course in Commerce.

The college has introduced the semester cum Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) to offer students an opportunity to learn a wide range of subjects. Therefore, the students should have to choose one honor (core) subject with two or more as subsidiary (elective) subjects for the specific undergraduate streams.

The college had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities under the Gujarat University, Ahmedabad.

The college holds the distinction of being the first Commerce College of Gujarat also was ranked 38th all over India in the survey conducted by the NIRF.

The college has its own selection process unlike other colleges under Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. The college has an online application process where prospective applicants are expected to fill in their interests and academic achievements.

Admission has been done when seekers who have registered with the University are eligible for admissions in the college.

University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, and various other examinations are held in the college premises.
