Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals, Mumbai was established on 30th March 1843 but became operational with the initiative of Jagannath Shankarsheth on 3rd November 1845. Grant Medical College is a public medical college that provides higher education and is managed by the J.J. Group of Hospitals.
Located on the campus of Sir J. J. Hospital in Byculla, Grant Medical College, under the Government of Maharashtra, is a premier medical institution that is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The college has been approved and recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi.
The birth of the college was initiated by Sir Robert Grant, the Governor of Bombay who had a dream to start a medical college. He drafted a proposal in March 1838 in which he discussed the subject of medical education for Indians. This proposal was sent to Sir Auckland in Calcutta.
A donation of Rs 1 Lakh for building a hospital for the education of Indians was offered by Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy. On 18th July 1838, The East India Company endorsed the proposal for a medical college. However, it is during this time that Sir Robert Grant succumbed to cerebral apoplexy.
Hence, later it was decided to turn the already existing Indian General hospital into a "School of Practice", which is now famous as Sir J.J. Hospital, with the help of a donation from Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy. The name, Grant Medical College, was suggested by Jagannath Shankarsheth, a famous Sanskrit scholar in order to give honor to Sir Robert Grant.
The college provided the G.G.M.C. degree in the beginning, which was replaced by L.M. (Licentiate of Medicine), which was again replaced by L.M.&S. (Licentiate of Medicine and Surgery) and finally, the college was given the rights to award the M.B.B.S. degree.
The India Today Magazine has ranked it in the seventh place among all the medical colleges in India.
Currently, Grant Medical College offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and add-on fellowship courses in medical streams.
Candidates who are seeking admission to this college should have scored 60% marks in the 12th board exams. For SC and ST candidates, the percentage of marks fixed is 40%. These students have to clear the Common Entrance Test or MHT-CET. The Government of Maharashtra conducts this test.
