Govt. Sanskrit College, Tripunithura (Dist. Ernakulam) is a general degree college offers different courses in Sanskrit literature was established on 14th January 1914 and managed under the Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Kerala.
It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone on the part of progress.
The college is affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) on 19th June 1962 & 12(B) on 16th July 1988 under Act, 1956.
It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.02 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 28th March 2017.
The aim of the college is of imparting instruction in various Sastras of Sanskrit that the courses were started.
It is a co-educational government Institute, providing a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Ernakulam played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
Govt. Sanskrit College was founded by his highness Sri. Sri Rama Varma Maharaja of Kochi, who was a profound scholar of Sanskrit. Also, was managed by H.H. the Maharaja Sri Mulam Tirunal of the Travancore on the model of the Benares Sanskrit College with title courses in Sanskrit.
At the beginning of the 20th century, modern system of education was introduced by the British was gaining wider acceptance. On the other hand, the traditional education system was getting weaker and weaker. This caused the considerable decrease in the number of students seeking ‘Sastric’ studies.
Moreover, there was no well-organized institution to impart traditional Sanskrit education. His Highness Sri. Sri Rama Varma Maharaja of Kochi felt the necessity of an institution to give instruction in the advanced Sastras of Sanskrit and as a result of that, he founded the Sanskrit College, the former form of the present Government Sanskrit College, Thripunithura.
In 1936, the college was affiliated to the University of Madras, Madras and subsequently to the Travancore University. In 1948, the courses of study were reorganized and the college was raised to a first Grade Degree college. The M.A. courses in Nyaya and Vedantha were introduced in 1956, and those in Sahitya and Vyakarana in 1962.
The college now imparts instruction mainly in Sanskrit Sastras. B.A. courses in Nyaya Vayakarana, Sahitya, Vedanta and Jyothisha and Ph.D. programmes are conducted in this college.
The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The student's admission is done as per the admission criteria prescribed by the affiliating university.
The college had received many awards and accolades at a city, state and national level for their educational advancements also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of sports and curricular activities under the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
The college offers three years undergraduate and two years postgraduate course in Arts stream with various specializations under the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. It also offers the Ph.D. course.
Students should have to choose one honor (core) subject with two or more as subsidiary (elective) subjects for the specific undergraduate streams.
University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, and various other examinations are held in the college premises.
