Government Medical College, Srinagar was established in 1959.

The college is affiliated to the University of Kashmir. The college is mainly concerned with imparting Health and Medical Education, and there are several hospitals, associating the College.

All the hospitals act as the Tertiary Heath Centers and they are also the Main Referral Hospitals from all corners of Kashmir Valley. The Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar works with a view to achieve several aims and objectives.

Apart from imparting medical education to the students of the state, the college also strives hard to provide quality treatment facilities to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The college offers many courses in different fields of medical science at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The main course offered by the college is MBBS at the undergraduate level and the postgraduate courses include MD, MS and Diploma courses. The college produces around a 100 Medical Graduates each year and the students are admitted purely on the basis of Merit obtained in the Common Entrance Examination.

The examination is held by the Board of Professional Entrance Examination once every year. The Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar has a large number of departments that help the administration in imparting medical education also in providing treatment to the people.

The major departments of the college include the department of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine, Microbiology, Social and Preventive Medicine (P.S.M), Otorhinolaryngiology (Ear, nose and throat), Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Orthopaedics.
