As a part of Pt. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science, Government Dental College in Rohtak was set up in 1981. The college was managed by the state government and PGIMS.
 
Government Dental College, Rohtak is not only aided by the state government, it is also totally owned by the state government. Out of all the government colleges in Haryana, this is the only college that has this privilege.

Affiliated to Pt. B.D. Sharma University of Health Sciences, Rohtak, Government Dental College, Rohtak, is approved and recognized by the Dental Council of India, New Delhi.

The college aims at delivering excellent quality patient care through education, research and expertise in the clinical sphere.

In the beginning, Government Dental College, Rohtak was started in 1960 as a guest institute at Medical College, Patiala. In 1963, the dental college was shifted to Rohtak as there was a great demand for medical education in this area at that time. Also, there was a dearth of patient care services in this area.

In the years that followed, the college proved to be an asset as it transformed itself into a successful medical education and research centre in the dental category. Currently, it has been named as Pt. B.D. Sharma, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak.

Government Dental College, Rohtak has been ranked as the 10th best dental college amongst all the dental colleges in the state. The college has been recognized internationally for its expertise in oral healthcare and dental education. It is one of the institutes that has been acclaimed for higher learning, keeping in mind the institution's mission.

A BDS programme for 5 years (undergraduate) and an MDS programme for 3 years (postgraduate) along with various specializations are offered at the dental college. A centre for distance learning has been set up at the university in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.

Government Dental College, Rohtak also has tied up with various institutions and top universities across the world to conduct various researches and exchange programmes.

An online application system enables applicants to submit their details about their academic achievements and interests. They should take into consideration the cut-off marks specified by the college for admission and compare it with their best of four/PCM/PCB, the one that is applicable.

There are 70 seats in the college and admission for these seats is possible through National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET).

  • Hi-Tech internet facilities can be availed by the students and teachers as per their needs
  • The Institution established one anti-ragging committee.  The Institution formed one committee associated with students and teachers for anti-ragging. The decision of the committee is the final for any punishment against ragging
  • Continued Dental Education (CDE) programme is conducted once in 3 months in the college. Its importance is to gain more knowledge in the field of dentistry.
  • Hi-Tech  theory class was taken through "Touch On Cloud" Software to the Students with iPad and Laptops
  • The patients were explained and counseled about their problems through the i-Pad explanation with pictures. In order to understand the basic relation between Sugar & Dental Caries as well as improper brushing technique and Periodontal diseases, this i-Pad counseling got overall success criteria
  • Mentor-Mentee system is a program designed exclusively for students to interact with one faculty who helps the student to solve academic, and other personal problems. Mentor, in turn, interacts with Deputy Chief Mentor and Chief Mentor for further measures. Apart from this, counseling is provided by professional counselors
  • Department of Periodontics has conducted the "Laser Hands-on Course" for all the CRRIs who posted in the department and also given demon in Vegetables and patients with  appreciation Certificate
  • The college  strongly believes in overall development of the student and hence extracurricular activities of the students are given equal importance
  • The Root Canal Treatment (RCT) has been done under the "Endodontic Microscope" in Post Graduate Clinic of Conservative and Endodontic Department
  • Annual Cultural week and Sports week are arranged to bring the talents of the students to the fore while prizes won at intercollegiate tournaments speaks volumes especially the group dance troupe
