As a part of Pt. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science, Government Dental College in Rohtak was set up in 1981. The college was managed by the state government and PGIMS.
Government Dental College, Rohtak is not only aided by the state government, it is also totally owned by the state government. Out of all the government colleges in Haryana, this is the only college that has this privilege.

In the beginning, Government Dental College, Rohtak was started in 1960 as a guest institute at Medical College, Patiala. In 1963, the dental college was shifted to Rohtak as there was a great demand for medical education in this area at that time. Also, there was a dearth of patient care services in this area.
In the years that followed, the college proved to be an asset as it transformed itself into a successful medical education and research centre in the dental category. Currently, it has been named as Pt. B.D. Sharma, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Rohtak.
Government Dental College, Rohtak has been ranked as the 10th best dental college amongst all the dental colleges in the state. The college has been recognized internationally for its expertise in oral healthcare and dental education. It is one of the institutes that has been acclaimed for higher learning, keeping in mind the institution's mission.
A BDS programme for 5 years (undergraduate) and an MDS programme for 3 years (postgraduate) along with various specializations are offered at the dental college. A centre for distance learning has been set up at the university in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi.
