Government College of Teacher Education, Hampankatta (Mangaluru) was established as a College of Education in 1952 to impart higher education.
In the beginning, the college was affiliated with University of Mysore, Mysuru. Later, in 1982, on the establishment of Mangalore University, Mangaluru it affiliation was shifted to this university.
The college was upgraded to College of Teacher Education in 1993 under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Teacher Education.
It is recognized & approved by Govt. of Karnataka and National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bengaluru.
It was accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade - (CGPA Score 2.49 on a 4 Point Scale in 1st Cycle) on September 21, 2013.
The main aim of the college is to impart & provide quality education in the field of B.Ed. to young aspirants with the correct mix of technology and with well-qualified faculty members.
At present, the college offers two years Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course for those who have completed their graduation with minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.
Students here are admitted who completed their graduation from recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the Degree level. But Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled to a relaxation 5% marks ineligibility for admission.
