Government College of Art & Craft (GCAC), Kolkata was established in 1864. Its affiliated to University of Calcutta, Kolkata.

Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta is one of the oldest and premier institutes of art education in India. Boasting of a 157 year legacy, the college has always been a seat of academic excellence. GCAC is a co-educational seat of learning and affiliated to University of Calcutta.It offers four years semester based undergraduate (B.F.A.) programmes in Painting, Indian Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Design, Textile Design, Ceramic Art and Pottery, and Design:Wood and Leather. Currently the institution follows the Choice Based Credit System (C.B.C.S.) for its undergraduate programmes.

It also offers two year semester based intensive masters (M.F.A.) programmes in Painting, Indian Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Graphic Design,Textile Design, Ceramic Art and Pottery, and Design: Wood and Leather. From 2005 the institution has also commenced the doctoral degree programme (Ph.D) in Fine Arts. It is the only fine arts institution in the country to offer a specialized course in Indian painting.The institution has received an ‘A’ from the NAAC accreditation committee in 2007.

The premier art institution of Kolkata, is the oldest art institution in India. Its alumni of world renowned painters, sculptors, designers and printmakers make up its glorious 150 years.

GCAC received an accreditation from U.G.C. (Govt. of India) and NAAC with an A grade. The main aim of the college is to develop creative professionals through effective training and skills development.

The college is located at the historic Chowringhee neighbourhood of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and adjacent to the Indian Museum, the college is spread over 1.58 acres of eco-friendly land. It is well connected by bus, taxi and underground metro railway. The college is a thriving space for intellectual and artistic exchange.

Exhibitions, workshops, film-screenings, special lectures, cultural events, sports, and many other events are organized frequently.

The Annual Exhibition and Annual Social along with the Alumni Day have come up as a winter fest in Kolkata for decades, where artists, connoisseurs, art lovers all visit the college campus. An excursion to sites of historic and cultural importance has been conducted on a regular basis. The student matters have been successfully represented by the members of Student’s Union which has always beenan apolitical representative body; a healthy feature, seldom found in Kolkata college campuses.

The landmarks of central Kolkata: Indian Museum, Asiatic Society, Victoria Memorial,Academy of Fine Arts, Rabindra Sadan,
St Paul’s Cathedral, Birla Planetarium, Maidan, Park Street and New Market all are located in the vicinity of the campus. An in house canteen is operational in the campus. Students common rooms and a small playground inside the premises is available for sports and recreation.
