Government College for Girls, Patiala was established as an Intermediate College in 1942 formerly known as Victoria Girls College.

In the inception, the college was established by the Saravpali Dr. Radhia Krishnan ji laid the foundation stone of Government College for Girls, Patiala on 23rd January 1954.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with Punjabi University, Patiala and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 5th November 1956 under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.01 on a 4 Point Scale in 2nd Cycle) on 5th November 2016.

The aim of the college was committed to providing quality education to girl students, so as to enrich and empower them, especially those belonging to the weaker sections of society and rural areas.

It is a woman government Institute, provided a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Patiala played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of education, sports and curricular activities under Punjabi University, Patiala.

The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Bachelor of Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management streams and postgraduate courses in Arts and Science with various specializations under Punjabi University, Patiala. It also offers Diploma, Post Graduate Diploma, Add-On Certificate courses as well.

The college has established an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) on 2nd April 2003 to assure the quality of the college and also details regarding submission of Annual Quality Assurance Reports (AQAR) to NAAC annually
Internet & Wi-Fi facilities may be availed by the students and teachers as per their needs

The college has a significant presence in the field of research. A number of major & minor research projects are awarded to the faculty members by the UGC and other bodies
A special complaint cell (Sexual Harassment Cell) has been formed for the female students in the college. Students can directly complain orally or by written application to the head of the cell. Apart from this, Ragging is strictly prohibited on the college campus
The college has a large playground with well-equipment for different sports like Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Hockey, Badminton and so on
A medical facility has been available in the college for the benefit of the students
State Government and Central Government offers a number of scholarships to the meritorious students and the students belonging to SC / ST / OBC
The institution has provided ICT facilities like computers, projectors, audio-visual gadgets, scanners and printers to the departments and also other aids and a huge number of availability of books for effective delivery of curriculum and for inculcating the knowledge of the subject

The college consists Women Cell to help female students. This cell helps and guides girls to sort out from their personal problem and avoid them from any harassment
