Goalpara College, Goalpara was established on 8th August, 1955. It was first established as a night college under the Principalship of Late Wajuddin Ahmed, MSc, B.L. with six lecturers and 22 students.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati & recognized by the University Grants Commission under section 2(f) & 12(B) Act, 1956 and accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council with "B" Grade.

Brief History:

With the unstinting support and guidance of Late Khagendranath Nath, the then M.L.A. of Goalpara and Social activist, a group of sympathetic and enthusiastic people dedicated themselves for establishing a college on the south bank of Brahmaputra and because of their relentless endeavour, and indomitable spirit ultimately, this under graduate college was established in Goalpara town.

With the co-operationand financial help of the generous people of the locality, soon there was a permanent structure ofthe college building to make it a full-fledged institution of higher education of the district ofGoalpara on the south Bank of Brahmaputra in 1959.

It was brought under the Deficit Grants-in–Aid system in 1962. When the college began to receive the deficit grants-in-aid from the Govt.and got a little over the financial constraints, the same group of enthusiastic people under tookanother bold venture of opening the Science stream. As a result the Science faculty was introduced in 1966 and was brought under the Deficit Grant-in-Aid system in 1974.

Since then, both the faculties have been flourishing and attracting large number of students from various parts of the state and even from the neighbouring state and during the last academic Session i.e., 2014-15 the college enrolled more than two thousand students into its different courses.

The college has been brought under the provisions of Assam College Employees (Provincialization) Act, 2005 with effect from December 2005. The college caters the higher educational need of about 2000 students in both Arts and Science streams.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Courses in Arts, Science & Commerce stream under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts, Science & Commerce stream under Gauhati University, Guwahati and also offers some Career Oriented Courses / Add On Course.

The college also has a Contact Centre of Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), Gauhati University for PG courses. Besides this, the college is running a Study Centre of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOPU), Guwahati.

  • College has an Extension Education Centre for arranging programmes for extension of education amongst the students as well as the common people. The centre organizes workshops, seminars, symposia on various occasions.
  • The NSS unit of the college arranges social service camps and undertakes programmes for social upliftment under the guidance of the Programme Officer.
  • The college encourages the students in different co-curricular activities such as Debate, Quiz, Literary fields etc. Annual competitions are held in these fields during the college week.
  • The college has an active NCC unit comprising of both boy and girl cadets imparting training under 1 Assam Bn. NCC (Army wing)
