Government College for Girls, Ludhiana was popularly known as Gujranwala Khalsa College, Ludhiana was established on 1st May 1943.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.

The college is affiliated with Panjab University, Chandigarh and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) on 5th November 1956 & 12(B) on 1st July 1974 under Act, 1956.

It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B++" Grade (CGPA Score 2.65 on a 4 Point Scale in 1st Cycle) on 8th January 2004.

The aim of the college was for the girl students from urban as well as rural areas where they can receive higher education at affordable expenses.

It is a woman government Institute, provided a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Ludhiana played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

In recognition of its contribution to higher learning, the college has been selected to be upgraded as Model Degree College of the state.

The college also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of education, sports and curricular activities under Panjab University, Chandigarh.

The college offers three years undergraduate courses in Bachelor of Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management streams and postgraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, and Science with various specializations under Panjab University, Chandigarh. It also offers Diploma, Post Graduate Diploma, Add-On Certificate courses as well.

The college has a significant presence in the field of research. A number of major & minor research projects are awarded to the faculty members by the UGC and other bodies
A special complaint cell (Sexual Harassment Cell) has been formed for the female students in the college. Students can directly complain orally or by written application to the head of the cell. Apart from this, Ragging is strictly prohibited on the college campus
The college has a large playground with well-equipment for different sports like Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Hockey, Badminton and so on
A medical facility has been available in the college for the benefit of the students
State Government and Central Government offers a number of scholarships to the meritorious students and the students belonging to SC / ST / OBC
