About Faculty of Law - University of Delhi

Faculty of Law - University of Delhi was established in 1924. It is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. The college is surrounded on all sides by Miranda House, Daulat Ram College, Hindu College, St. Stephen's College, the Faculty of Management Studies and Delhi School of Economics.

Faculty of Law, University of Delhi is affiliated to University of Delhi, New Delhi. The college is approved and recognised by the Bar Council of India (BCI), New Delhi. Faculty of Law, University of Delhi has been ranked third among all the law colleges in India.

In the earlier days, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi functioned from the Prince's Pavilion in the Old Viceregal Lodge Grounds. Later, in 1963, the college was shifted to currently where it is now, the Chhatra Marg, University of Delhi, Delhi.

In the beginning, the degree course, the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), a two-year part-time course, was started. The course was conducted by ten teachers. Since 1942, evening classes were also started simultaneously with the morning classes.

In 1944, the Master of Laws (LL.M.) a one-year degree course was introduced. This course was introduced to arm freedom fighters with the knowledge of law so that they could use it as a device to bring about social change.

LL.B. was made a full-time course in 1947 and a couple of new courses were started. From a one-year degree course, LL.M. was converted into a full-time two-year course.

Two new courses were started during this time. They were Bachelor of Civil Laws (B.C.L.) and Certificate of Proficiency (Law). However, these two courses were discontinued later on. These were discontinued in 1966 and 1961, respectively.

As there was an increasing demand for evening classes, two centres were set up to meet this demand. In 1970, the Law Centre-I at Mandir Marg was started.

In 1971, the Law Centre-II at Dhaula Kuan was set up. Admission to these courses is possible only through entrance tests and seats are given as per merit.

Students seeking admission to different courses offered by the college have to register with the college and fill up the admission forms that are available online. Candidates have to appear for the DU LLB Entrance Exam. This exam is conducted by Delhi University and is a national-level law admission test.
