Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai, is a constituent college of the University of Madras, Chennai, was established on 24th July 1948 by Shri. V.L. Ethiraj, an eminent lawyer, and renowned philanthropist.
The college is affiliated with University of Madras, Chennai and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on August 1978 under Act, 1956.
It is also recognized and approved by All India Council For Technical Education, New Delhi and re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.36 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) on 25th October 2013.
The aim of the college is the commitment to providing quality education to women with strong emphasis on values and tradition and with the singular mission of empowering women.
It is a women's private college providing regular courses in which is located in the urban part of Chennai played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
The college conferred the status of grant-in-aid college that the fees and all the facilities for the students are fixed by the government. The college conferred the status of 'autonomy' by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on 12th February 1999.
The college also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of education, sports and curricular activities under the University of Madras, Chennai.
The college has recognized as with the status of "College with Potential for Excellence" by the University Grants Commission in 2005.
In 2014, MOUs signed with the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) - the UK, TVS Training and Services, Chennai, Department of Archaeology, Government of Tamilnadu and Knowledge Capital Investment Group (KCIG)
At present, the college offers three years undergraduate and two years postgraduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management stream with various specializations under the University of Madras, Chennai.
It also offers Post Graduate Diploma, Doctorate, and Add-On Certificate courses.
UG courses are under Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS) and PG courses are under Credit and Semester System (CSS) of the affiliating university. Therefore, the students should have to choose one honor (core) subject with two or more as subsidiary (elective) subjects for the specific undergraduate streams.
University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the University of Madras, Chennai and various other examinations are held in the college premises. The admission criteria for the college is strictly based on Merit and Written Test.
