Initially, the Dyal Singh College was established in Lahore (Pakistan) in 1910. Later, after the partition of India, the was re-established at Karnal (Haryana) in 1949 and Delhi in 1952.
Since 1959, the college is functioning at the present location and was taken over by the University of Delhi in 1978 and it became one of the constituent colleges of the university.
Dyal Singh College owes its origin to the extreme generosity and foresight of Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, founder of ‘The Tribune’, Punjab University and ‘Punjab National Bank’, who willed his vast wealth in 1895 for the setting up of an Education Trust for a truly secular college. Consequently, Dyal Singh College was established at Lahore in 1910.
After the Partition of India, Dyal Singh College was established in Karnal and in 1952 at Delhi. It started functioning in the capital at Rouse Avenue as a constituent College of the University of Delhi w.e.f 05.08.1959 and at present location since 16.10.1962. During 1963-1967, it functioned in 2 units from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm. The University of Delhi took it over as a University Maintained institution in 1978.
The college is maintained and offers co-educational courses as per the norms and conditions of University of Delhi, New Delhi and it was recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) from 1959 onwards under Act, 1956 but taken over by the University of Delhi in 1978.
It was accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.01 on a 4 Point Scale in 1st Cycle) on March 28, 2017.
The college campus spread over 11 acres of land at Lodhi Road in South Delhi with panoramic green surroundings and elegant landscaping.
The college has well-qualified faculty members over 250 and over 100 dedicated non-teaching staff as well.
At present, the college offers co-educational undergraduate courses in Arts, Science, and Commerce stream with various specializations. It also offers postgraduate courses in Arts and Science stream with two-three specializations.
Currently, the college imparting higher education to over 4600 students including foreign students in Arts, Commerce, Mathematical Sciences, Science and Social Sciences courses with unique specializations.
For few UG courses are under Choice Based Credit and Semester System (CBCSS) and PG courses are under the Credit and Semester System (CSS) of the affiliating university. Therefore, the students should have to choose one honour (core) subject with two or more as subsidiary (elective) subjects for the specific undergraduate streams.
The college follows the university curricula and its faculty members contribute to curricula framing both at University and UGC levels. The norms & conditions of the university for admission to various courses are followed.

The vision of the college is guided by the Will of its founder Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia. The motto of the college “Gather Ye The Wisdom of East And West" aims to provide and disseminate a sound liberal education of highest standards and promote overall physical, mental, and moral well-being of all stakeholders to empower them to contribute whole-heartedly in nation-building and to serve humanity as socially responsible global citizens.
