Dr. G.U. Pope College of Education, Sawyerpuram was established in 2005.

Its affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University.

The College is managed under the CSI Thoothukudi Nazareth Diocesan Trust Association, Tuticorin. The College is named after Dr. G.U. Pope a renowned missionary who came to Sawyerpuram in 1842.

He established an institution in 1844, called a ‘Seminary’ for the training up of native agents in higher learning.

Their aim was to make Sawyerpuram a kind of university, surpassing anything of the kind that was to be found at that time in the Madras Presidency.

The ‘Seminary’ was their laboratory where he experimented with and perfected his teaching techniques. Pope Memorial higher Secondary School and Pope’s College are living monuments to the service of Dr. G.U. Pope to the cause of higher education in South India.

Now, a college of Education has been added to that list and proudly stands in the sacred place where the footsteps of Dr. G.U. Pope once trod.

The College is a self financing, co-educational institution with an intake of 100 students. The College is now affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University, Chennai. The motto of Dr. G.U. Pope College of Education is “Be the first be with the first”.

The College aims at excellence in education and gives training in all round development of the trainees.
