Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology Jalandhar (abbreviated NIT Jalandhar, NITJ, or NIT-J) was a public engineering institute formerly known as Punjab Regional Engineering College, Jalandhar (PREC) established in 1987. The institute was popularly known as NIT Jalandhar.
It is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology of India. It was founded as a joint venture between the Governments of Punjab and India.
It is one of the premier Institutions established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
The Institution was said to be a Deemed University and was recognized and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi & Institute of National Importance (INI), New Delhi by the Government of India. It is also accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi.
The aim of the college was to develop the technical human resource of excellence suitable for global requirements and ensure good quality academic and industrial research programs in different areas of engineering and technology to generate industry-institute synergy for shaping technical education to meet the requirement of the industry.
The college was formerly known as a Regional Engineering College and was given the status of National Institute of Technology (Deemed University) by the Government of India on 17th October 2002, under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi.
Subsequently, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, declared the Institute as "Institute of National Importance" under the act of Parliament-2007.
It is a co-educational public college, providing a regular course which is located in an urban part of a Jalandhar played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
About National Institutes of Technology (NITs):
The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are a group of premier federally-funded public engineering institutes in India.
They are governed by the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, which declared them as institutions of national importance alongside Indian Institutes of Technology.
These institutes of national importance receive special recognition from the Government of India.
The NIT Council is the supreme governing body of India's National Institutes of Technology (NIT) system and all 31 NITs are funded by the Government of India.
These institutes are among the top ranked engineering colleges in India and have one of the lowest acceptance rates for engineering institutes, of around 2 to 3 percent, second only to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India.
All NITs are autonomous which enables them to set up their own curriculum. The language of instruction is English at all these institutes.
NITs offer degree courses at Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate levels in various branches of Engineering, Architecture, Management, and Science.
Admission to the undergraduate courses such as Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) Programs in NITs are through the highly competitive Joint Entrance Examination (Main).
Admission to postgraduate courses is through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering for Master of Technology (M.Tech.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) programs, Common Admission Test for Master of Business Administration (MBA) program and NIMCET for Master of Computer Applications (MCA) program.
Since 2015, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority and Centralized Counselling for M.Tech/M.Arch and M.Plan conduct the admission process for undergraduate and postgraduate programs respectively in all NITs. As of 2017, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs is 18,013 and for postgraduate programs is 8,158 in all 31 NITs.
Courses offered & Achievements:
As National Institute of Technology, the Institute has a responsibility of providing high-quality education in Engineering and Technology to produce competent technical manpower for the country.
The institute offers the undergraduate program in Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in twelve disciplines of Engineering and Technology and Post graduate program in Master of Technology (M.Tech) and Master in Management (MBA) along with research programs leading to M.Sc and Ph.D.
The Institute acquires a national character having 50% student intake from the State of Punjab and the rest of other states/union territories of the country.
The admissions to the B.Tech programs run by the institute are very competitive having acceptance ratio nearly 2-3%. Students were admitted on the basis of All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) till 2012 but from 2013 the admission is based on Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) conducted across India.
Admissions to the M.Tech programs are by the GATE exam conducted by the IITs and IISc. The postgraduate admission is on the basis of research and interviews by the appropriate screening committees.
The college has been received numbers of an award in publication, offering scholarship also awarded by the different societies with in different fields.
Also, the government of India has constituted NIRF in the year 2016 to rank the engineering colleges in India. It has adopted world standard parameters and methodology and publishes the list of colleges every year.
NIRF rankings have become a benchmark because of their independent, honest & flavorless review. Due to an intake of top 1%ile students into its UG program, NIT Jalandhar has topped the NIRF 2017 rankings beating all other Institutes in the engineering category.
Apart from the above, to make students well aware of their field, there are student chapters of internationally acclaimed societies.
The ASME Student Section is an Institute chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. It strives to bring technical competency and excellence among the students of mechanical engineering and of all the disciplines.
