Department of Education - Bangalore University, Bengaluru, started its academic session as Department of Studies in Education, which was established in 1967 under Bangalore University.

It is a constituent department of Bangalore University, Bengaluru and offers courses under this university. It is recognized and approved by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bengaluru & Govt. of Karnataka.

It aims to provide the quality education to the future teachers and the department empowers the aspiring teachers to propagate education through the rungs of the society so that they serve the nation while making a satisfying career for themselves.

It is a co-educational department, providing regular courses in which is located in the urban part of Bengaluru played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

Based on their academic excellence with teaching faculty, the department has received the many achievements awards in the field of education and as well as curricular activities.

At present, the department offers two years Master of Education (M.Ed.) course for those who have completed their Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) with the minimum aggregate of 50% from any recognized university are eligible to apply for this course.

Students here are admitted who completed their graduation in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from the recognized university with at least 50% marks in major or in aggregate at the graduation level. But Scheduled Castes (S.C.), Scheduled Tribes (S.T.) & (O.B.C) candidates are to be entitled to a relaxation 5% marks ineligibility for admission.

Apart from this course, the department offers doctorate course in education and eligibility for this course based on entrance examinations as well as UGC-JRF, NET & SLET etc. The Ph.D. programme is conducted based on UGC Guidelines.

The admission for these courses is strictly based on the norms stipulated by National Council for Teacher Education & Bangalore University, Bengaluru.

The department has its own selection process, unlike other colleges under the university. Sometimes, the department has an online application process where prospective applicants are expected to fill in their interests and academic achievements.

A special complaint cell (Sexual Harassment Cell) has been formed for the female students in the college. Students can directly complain orally or by written application to the head of the cell. Apart from this, Ragging is strictly prohibited on the college campus
