Darrang College, Tezpur was established in 1945 by the people of Tezpur and started with 8 teachers and 112 students in the roll.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, Guwahati and recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2F. It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "B" Grade.

Brief History:

Late Kamakhya Prasad Tripathy, a veteran freedom fighter and trade union leader came forward to shoulder the responsibility of the founder principal. Initially classes were held at the bungalow of Arnaldo Duchi, an Italian man who sold the property to the college.

Subsequently, the college was shifted for nearly two years to the American Base Hospital campus at Mission Chariali, then to the dak bungalow in the heart of the town, and finally to the present site in October 1951.

Darrang College has had an eventful career since its inception. His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet visited in 1959 after his historic flight from his own land, followed Smt. Indira Gandhi in 1963.

Ever since the college settled in its permanent site, it has been maintaining a high academic standard all through.

With the motto, Darrang College has been uninterruptedly working for fruitful dissemination of knowledge to their pupils with the solemn aim of making them resourceful citizens of the country.

The college has an adequate academic and physical infrastructure catering to the 25 subjects in the 10+2 and Under Graduate Classes.

The college offers two years Higher Secondary Course in Arts, Science & Commerce under Assam Higher Secondary Educational Council (AHSEC), Guwahati and three years Degree Courses in Arts, Science & Commerce under Gauhati University, Guwahati.

The college also has a Contact Centre of Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL), Gauhati University for PG courses.

The college has an attractive campus situated in secured and serene atmosphere suitable for learning with Young, dynamic faculty and non-teaching staff

Every Department has adequate number of class rooms in order to accommodate the students comfortably in the classes

The college has well-equipped with all modern facilites like classrooms, library, canteen, computer centre, seminar halls & auditorium etc.

The college campus is eco-friendly and free from outside disturbance which provides a congenial atmosphere for study & provides separate hostel facilites for boys & girls

The college has a library with a good number of books (both text and reference) on various subjects to meet the needs of the students as well as the teachers. Daily Newspapers and selected journals are also regularly subscribed

Teaching is based on lectures, seminars, tutorials, remedials and assignments. Teaching takes place in well-equipped classrooms, galleries and laboratories with the required support systems. Seminars, tutorials, remedials and assignments supplement the lectures in a way that enhances the learning experience

The college Auditorium, with a sitting capacity for 1000, came into existence in the Diamond Jubilee year, 2005-06. It is used for holding various competitions during the annual College Week along with other cultural programmes besides seminars and meetings

The college has two canteens within the campus for refreshment of students and teachers. The canteens usually function from 9 a.m. to 5.15 p.m

Adequate number of water coolers dispensing pure drinking water has been provided within the campus

Darrang College has a playground within the college campus which is large enough for outdoor games like football and cricket and for various track and field events

A shed for parking the cars of the college employees has been newly constructed. There are as many as five bicycle and bike sheds for the employees and students of the college

The college has installed a new 100KVA silent Generator funded by UGC (NERO) for uninterrupted power supply. This is in addition to the already existing 20-kilowatt generator for main building and two 2000-watt generators for the girls hostel & Commerce Department.

The college has an active Women.s Studies Cell, engaged in the study of various women-related issues and in providing regular psychological counselling to the students. It has a tie-up with the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Mental Health Hospital, Tezpur

The college has established an Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) to assure the quality of the college

The State Government and the Central Government offers a number of scholarships to the meritorious students and the students belonging to SC /ST / OBC

Seminars are organized at departmental levels from time to time to enrich the level of knowledge of the students in the relevant field

Internet facilities can be availed by the students and teachers as per their needs
