Established by Dr. Ida S. Scudder, an American missionary, in 1900, Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore is a medical college that is private in nature, offering higher education.
It was managed by the Vellore Christian Medical College Foundation Inc. which was earlier known as the Vellore Christian Medical College Board (USA). The medical college is a minority-run research and educational institute.
Christian Medical College (CMC) is affiliated to Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Trivandrum and The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai.
The Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi has approved and recognized the institute. On 3rd August 2001, a five-star rating was given by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bengaluru to the institute. The University Grants Commission has recognized the college for its world-class healthcare and medical education.
In the year 1909, a training programme was started for the nurses, only for women. In 1918, the training was started for women physicians with the collaboration of the Union Mission Medical School for Women. Later, the medical school was upgraded to a medical college by Scudder and the college was named Christian Medical College.
In the beginning, the college was affiliated to the University of Madras, Chennai. In 1942, the college started the MBBS course. In 1947, the first batch of men medical students were admitted. In 1950, the medical postgraduate courses were started, i.e., MD and MS. In 1969, postgraduate courses were started in nursing.
The India Today Magazine and Outlook India ranked the college in the third position among all private medical colleges in India. In 2015, WHO (World Health Organization) awarded the college the Public Health Champion Award.
CMC has become a landmark in the field of achievements: first college of nursing, 1946; first reconstructive surgery for leprosy in the world, 1948; first successful open heart surgery in India, 1961; first kidney transplant in India, 1971; first bone marrow transplantation, 1986; and first successful ABO-incompatible kidney transplant, 2009.
Currently, Christian Medical College offers 57 courses on the completion of which are awarded the degrees of MBBS, MS, MD, DM, MCh, Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D.; 52 fellowship courses; 14 diploma courses in nursing and other fields; and 44 allied health science courses.
Christian Medical College houses the South Asian Cochrane Network and Center. It is also home to the Infectious Diseases Training and Research Center which is internationally recognized.
In order to get admission to this college, students have to take the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and seats are offered based on merit. Candidates must also have scored an aggregate of 60% marks in the 12th board and students belonging to the SC/ST category must have scored an aggregate of 40% marks in the 12th board.
