On July 3rd, 1939, The College of Engineering, Trivandrum (CET) was established and it is the first engineering college in Kerala, situated in Thiruvananthapuram.

It was founded during the reign of the Travancore King, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma and as the head of the then Travancore state he deserves his share of credit in the establishment of the college.

The college is recognised and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi.

In the beginning, the college was housed in the former office and bungalow of the Chief Engineer (present PMG Office) Maj T.H. Mathewman, a Britisher was the first Principal.

Started as a constituent college of Travancore University, the college had an initial intake of 21 students each for Degree and Diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branches.

After the establishment of the Directorate of Technical Education in the late fifties, the college administration came under the control of the Government of Kerala. Later in 1960, the college was shifted to the present sprawling 125 acres campus with panoramic green surroundings and elegant landscaping.

From 1939 to 2014, the college was affiliated to University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram and later from 2014 onwards the college is affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Thiruvananthapuram.

Over the years, the intake of students increased and as of now with eight full-fledged departments offering 8 undergraduate, 19 postgraduate and doctoral programmes.

The college also offers part-time and full-time postgraduate programmes in engineering and architecture, as well as Master of Business Administration and Master of Computer Applications.

Undergraduate Programmes:

Kerala Engineering Entrance Examination (KEE) conducted by the Office of the Commissioner of Entrance Exams run by the Government of Kerala.

B.Tech (Lateral Entry) - Lateral Entry Examination (LET) conducted by Joint Controller of Technical Examinations by the Government of Kerala.

Postgraduate Programmes:

M.Tech/M.E - Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology, IITs.

MCA - Kerala MCA Entrance Examination, conducted by the LBS Centre for Science & Technology.

MBA - Management Aptitude Test (MAT) conducted by the All India Management Association, CAT conducted by the IIMs and CMAT conducted by AICTE.

At present, the college has around 3500 students, 285 teaching staff and 290 non-teaching staff. B.Tech, B.Arch, M.Tech, M.Plan, MCA and MBA and evening courses are also offered in this college.
