Centre for Distance Education - S.N.D.T Women's University, Mumbai was established in 1979. It is one of the constituent parts of the Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University, Mumbai.

It is one of the premier colleges established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
 
The college is self-affiliated to Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women's University, Mumbai and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

It is also recognized and approved by Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi. The DEC was established mainly to empower higher education through distance mode.

The CDE was established mainly to empower women through higher education. The CDE is offering several certificate /diploma /degree /post-graduate courses in various disciplines to thousands of girls/housewives/working women who could not complete their education (not even SSC/HSC) but are strongly motivated to upgrade their educational and /or professional qualifications.

In last 33 years, more than 3 lakhs women are benefitted by this facility and improved their careers in life.

The University shifted itself to a dual mode of education face to face as well as distance mode for women or who cannot attend the college due to various circumstances mainly to empower through higher education.

The college provides study material, prospectus, notes of the faculty, conducting some monthly basis classes in the campus and sending the updates about the exams and result.

For the exams, The college allows no. of various centres for the student in all over the country, providing university membership facilities to the students. Because of the distance learning program, women/ students are benefitted by this facility and improved their careers in life.
